In 1963, Meats by Linz started out as a small, family-owned butcher shop on the south side of Chicago. Today, they act as the country’s premier independent meat purveyor, providing high-quality meats and other food products to kitchens around the country. 

“We’re a fourth generation company, so we’re doing something right,” Kevin Sullivan, Ecommerce Director at The Linz Shop, said with a laugh. “We’ve seen so much success in-store that we wanted to bring that same kind of experience directly to customers in their homes.”

CHALLENGE

A bespoke platform was creating more challenges than it solved. 

When Meats by Linz decided to open The Linz Shop, the online, ecommerce portion of the business, they developed a bespoke site customised to their specific needs. 

“The site was very straightforward in that customers couldn’t do a lot with it,” Sullivan explained. “It wasn’t mobile responsive, we couldn’t have a lot of integrations, and we couldn’t do much when it came to promotions. All of this really put a damper on the business, and we knew we needed an upgrade if we were going to get serious about ecommerce.” 

As they began setting out a plan for their new ecommerce site, they looked for some specific must-have features. Their new ecommerce platform needed to:

  1. Facilitate a complex integration with their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.

  2. Provide features that could help the business grow, like adding new content and promotions.

SOLUTION

Finding partners for ecommerce excellence. 

As Sullivan and his team began looking for a new ecommerce platform, BigCommerce stood out from the competition. “BigCommerce offered everything we needed — all the right integrations, room to scale, and a price point that fit our budget,” he shared. 

As Sullivan started working with the BigCommerce team, he asked for a list of agency partners to help develop the new site. “We knew we’d need to tackle some complex development work that wasn’t feasible in-house. EYStudios came highly recommended, so we met with them, and they walked us through everything they could achieve for our site. They showed us mockups, and we were blown away,” Sullivan said. 

But the design work was only part of the decision to partner with EYStudios. “When it came to the integration work, they reached out to our ERP in advance to confirm they could handle everything. Our ERP was extremely impressed with EYStudios and the knowledge they brought forth,” explained Sullivan. “Going with them was an easy choice.”

Creating a better online experience. 

Chris Kosiba, Chief Client officer at EYStudios, quickly got to work putting their implementation plan into action. “Linz had some unique requirements, like integrating with their ERP and ensuring fast, efficient shipping,” he shared. 

First, the EYStudios team began building the integration with Canopy, Linz’s ERP. “The ERP integration was very complex,” Kosiba said. “There wasn’t a native integration available, so we had to customise it, both on the Canopy side and the BigCommerce side.” 

The vast majority of this work was done to ensure that all the product, inventory, and shipping data was passed quickly and accurately between the two systems. “The BigCommerce API made it so easy for us to integrate these two systems,” he explained. “Speed is key for Linz, and they rely on the Canopy and BigCommerce integration to help customers place and receive orders as quickly as possible.”

Customising the checkout for timely deliveries.

Additionally, customising the checkout was essential to meet the unique demands of selling perishable products. 

“One of the issues with being in the meat industry is we have a highly perishable product,” explained Sullivan. “To make sure customers receive their orders when they’re home — or within a few hours of being home — they have to reserve a delivery date.” 

The EYStudios team implemented a tailored delivery calendar and shipping logic to ensure shipping dates aligned with customers’ specific needs. This not only guarantees timely arrivals but also enhances the customer experience, especially during peak gift-giving seasons when reliable delivery is crucial.

Investments in digital marketing and strategy.

As The Linz Shop launched their BigCommerce site, the team recognised that creating a stunning, functional website was just the beginning — they needed to drive traffic and generate orders quickly. 

Their digital strategy has been essential to this effort, with investments in SEO, digital marketing, and affiliate marketing, allowing them to gain visibility across 80 industry publications. 

To reach even more potential customers, they’ve leveraged programmatic advertising to target the right audience at the right time, maximising marketing spend and impact. Additionally, their new Facebook and Instagram accounts have helped build brand awareness and engagement, expanding their reach to a larger audience.

A stampeding success. 

Since launching the new site on BigCommerce, The Linz Shop has been able to share their succulent selection with a new, larger audience. 

“We’ve seen sales increase by 29%. Traffic is up 65%. It’s been absolutely phenomenal,” Sullivan said. “The site is so fast and our marketing efforts are having such a huge impact. We’re showing up for more keywords in our first two weeks after launching than we had in the prior two years. We’re so happy with the results on BigCommerce and the work that EYStudios has done.” 

Also, The Linz Shop was honored with the BigCommerce Customer Award for Emerging Brand, celebrating their rapid growth and expanded digital presence. This recognition underscores their success in reaching a wider audience and building a standout ecommerce experience in the meat industry.

LOOKING AHEAD

New year. New opportunities. 

Now that the new site is launched, The Linz Shop is focusing on optimising existing workflows before expanding even further. “We’re just in shock,” Sullivan laughed. “We’re so satisfied with BigCommerce. We have a few more integrations we’re going to be building and optimising, but everything’s just running so smoothly.” 

“As we move into the new year, we’re going to be adding some really great features though,” he continued. “We have a new subscription we’re going to launch, plus we’re going to introduce a chatbot in 2025. Just a lot of great stuff that we can actually look forward to now that we’re on such a great platform. We can’t wait for 2025 and what’s next with BigCommerce.”
